Ø  Sulphur Parks & Recreation and the American Red Cross are registering for Lifeguard training classes now.  The classes will be held on November 22nd -25th.  Call SPAR or the American Red Cross for more info.

Ø  Lifetouch will be taking pictures in the auditorium on Thursday, November 12 from 8am to 1:20.  As always, pictures packages are complimentary for SHS staff members.

Ø  Juniors & Sophomores:  If you did not take a picture at registration, you can take it on Thursday, November 12 between 8am & 1:20 in the auditorium.  Packages & prices are in the front office.

Ø  Senior ads in the yearbook will go on sale Monday, November 9th until December 11th or until they are sold out.  You can pick up a form in the front office, counselor’s office, or download it from the SHS website.

 Re-Run News

·    This reminder to Seniors:  Graduate Sales will be at school Tuesday, November 10th during both lunches in the Auditorium foyer for you to turn in your order for graduation supplies.  Remember your deposit…they will have extra forms if you need one.

·    On November 14th and February 27th the Louisiana Scholars College will have a Scholars’ Day.  Call 1-800-838-2208 to register or go online at www.nsula.edu/scholarsrecruiting.

·    The senior panoramic picture scheduled for tomorrow has been postponed.  The new date is November 17th.

·    Anyone wanting to take the December 12th ACT:  The regular deadline is November 6th.

·    The Twisters are selling bottle cap necklaces for $10.  You cans see the samples I the window of the front office, and purchase necklaces from a Twister.

·    If you are interested in academic scholarships to LSU you must apply for admissions by November 15th.

·    Central Library in Lake Chares will host an ACT tips program on Thursday, November 19th from 6:30-7:30pm.  Pre-register by calling 721-7118 or 721-7121. This is a free program.

·    Sweatshirts are here!!  You may purchase them in room 5201.  Cost is $20 for sizes Adult small through Adult X-large and $25 for 2X and above.  Get yours today and show your TOR spirit!

Teacher Announcements

·    If you didn’t miss a day in October, please come to the Business Office and sign the sheet!

·    There are new sub lists in your box.  Please keep one at school and bring one home.  They are light purple and should replace the bright yellow sub list.

Senior Announcements

·    Sowela Community and Technical College will hold a financial aid workshop on Sunday, February 21 from 2-4pm to assist and answer questions about filling out the FAFSA.

·    ULL is hosting two Fall Preview Days on Saturday,  November 21 from 8am to 3pm.  Students are to register online at http://admissions.louisiana.edu/basics/previewday.shtml

·    On Tuesday, January 26, 2010, McNeese Financial Aid will host a Workshop at SHS to assist parents and answer questions about filling out the FAFSA which is the application for TOPS, Grants, and loans.  It will be held in the auditorium at 6pm.

·    Seniors are invited to participate in the second annual “Freedom in Academia” student essay contest.  Eight scholarships will be awarded to students who best explain (in essay form) why freedom of speech on college campuses is crucial.  See Ms. Lockhart for more info, deadline is 11/6/09.

·    Northwestern is hosting a senior day on Saturday, November 7.  To RSVP call 1-800-327-1503.

·    Seniors – If you are interested in applying for a NROTC scholarship, see Ms. Lockhart or start an application today at https://www.nrotc.navy.mil.  These scholarships could be worth up to $180,000

·    Seniors – Enter Lela’s “Tis the Season” Christmas card are contest.  Your art could be featured in Lela’s 2009 holiday greeting card.  $2000 in scholarships will be awarded to Louisiana high school seniors.  For details and guidelines, visit www.askLela.org.  Deadline is November 6th.

·    African American Louisiana residents who attend high school, have a “B” average, and ACT score of 19 are eligible for the “Smart Start” scholarship.  You must plan to attend a 4-year Louisiana college in the fall and demonstrate financial need.  See Ms. Lockhart for more info.  Deadline is January 25, 2010.

·    Al’s Formal Wear Scholarship – 2 scholarships at $1000 each.  Deadline is 5/31/10.  For app, visit www.alsformalwear.com/SchoolApp

·    Blue/Gold Foundation Scholarship – Must have 3.0 or higher GPA, and be involved in at least one organization at SHS.  App is available in counselor’s office.  Deadline is 02/15/10-valued at $2500.

·    Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Scholarship – Awarded based on academic performance, community service, and financial need.  Short narrative is required and interviews will be conducted.  Minimum 3.0 GPA.  Deadline is 01/30/10.

·    Delta “Dream Education” Scholarship – Valued at $1000.  Awarded to a female minority senior.  You must pursue a degree in education.  Criteria are minimum GPA 2.5, community service, and financial need.  Short narrative and interview required.  Deadline 01/30/10.

·    Delta Tech – Delta Tech is awarding 8 scholarships to 2010 high school graduates.  You must plan to attend Delta Tech after graduation.  Please see Ms. Lockhart for info about this scholarship.

·    Gates Millennium Scholars Program – Must be a minority student, citizen, or permanent legal resident of the US, have a 3.3 GPA or higher.  Also demonstrate leadership potential through participation in community service, extracurricular or other activities, must meet Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria.  Apply online at www.gmsp.org.  Deadline is 01/11/10.

·    KFC Colonel’s Scholars – Must be graduating in 2010, minimum GPA of 2.75or higher, enroll in a public, in-state college or university in the fall of 2010 and pursue a bachelor’s degree, be a US citizen or permanent resident.  App online at www.kfcscholars.org from 12/01/09-02/10/10.

·    LA-STEM Research Scholars Program at LSU- Valued at $11,500 per year for up to 4 years.  Must have a 3.5GPA or ACT of 24or higher.  Must plan to pursue an undergraduate in a STEM discipline.  See Ms. Lockhart if interested.  Deadline is 11/15/09. 

·    Louisiana Housing Council NAHRO Scholarship Applicants family member must have worked for a housing agency which is a member in good standing during the student’s entire senior year.  GPA of 3.0, exhibit financial need, and attend a college or vocational training program after high school graduation.  Deadline – 02/15/10

·    National Strength and Conditioning Foundation Scholarships – Must have a 3.0 GPA or higher, demonstrate acceptance into an accredited institution with a plan to major in strength and conditioning related field.  Two scholarships valued at $1000 each will be awarded.  Apply online at www.nsca-lift.org/Foundation/#hs.

·    Our Lady of the Lake College Franciscan Scholarship – 3.5 GPA or higher, ACT composite of 22; essay required; record of activities and leadership.  Full tuition scholarship package for four years toward an undergraduate degree at Our Lady of the Lake College.  Deadline is 02/15/10.
