                                                                 First run news

·    The Key Club service project is Saturday, March 20th at the Swashbuckler concessions.  See Mrs. Malone or Mrs. Wright to sign up to work.

·    Applications for SHS students interested in health care careers are now available from the counselors and science teachers for the 201 MASH Summer Camp.  Students must have an overall GPA of at least a 3.4 to be considered for the program and should have completed Biology.  Applications must be received by April 16th along with a $100 registration fee.

                                                        Re-Run News

·    Due to the NUMEROUS scheduling conflicts the Honors Programs have been rescheduled again.  The Seniors Honors program will be Tuesday, may 11th at 6:30pm with practice at 9am that morning.  The only senior test being given that day is 6th hour so there should not be any conflict with testing.  The Sophomore/Junior Honors program will be Wednesday, May 12th at 10am.  These are the only open dates that are available.  Please note these changes in your calendar.

·    Get your teams together, 4 boys and 4 girls for the first SHS Field Day.  Registration is $40 per team.  Deadline to register your team is March 19th by 3:10pm.  Teams may wear their team shirts to school on Friday, March 26th.

·    Field Day team registration forms can be picked up from Mrs. Petross or Mrs. Brooks.  Admission tickets/bands will be sold starting March 17th.  Registration forms are in the front office, Mrs. Petross’ room (#3205) and Mrs. Brooks’ room (#3204).  Field Day admission is $2 for students that want to watch the fun!! Wristbands will go on sale at lunch on Monday, March 15th

·    The Social Studies classes are having a contest to see which class can raise the most money to benefit ShelterBox.  ShelterBox is an international disaster relief charity that delivers emergency shelter, warmth, and dignity to people affected by disaster worldwide.  These boxes have the essentials for a family of 10 and are delivered by Emergency Response Teams.  We will be given a tracking number for the box we sponsor and we will be able to track it online to see which area our box is able to help.  This is a quick and easy way to make a positive impact on the lives of those that are hurting.  The winning Social Studies class will have a pizza party.  Deadline is 04/09/10.

Teacher Announcements

Ø  Knights of Columbus Council # 3015 are selling BBQ pork steak dinners for $6.  The dinners include pork steaks, beans, and potato salad.  If you are interested in buying a dinner, see Angie in the Business Office.  All orders and money is due April 8th.  The dinners will be delivered on Thursday, April 15th.

Ø  Please come sign payroll if you have been absent this month or if you know you will be out on or before March 26th.  We have a very short pay period this month.

·          Al’s Formal Wear Scholarship – 2 scholarships at $1000 each.  Deadline is 5/31/10.  For app, visit www.alsformalwear.com/SchoolApp

·          American Fire Sprinkler Association Scholarship – Apply on-line at www.afsascholarship.org; deadline is 05/03/10.

·          Josh Babineaux Memorial Scholarship – Must be a member of the SHS Rodeo Club for two years or participated in High School rodeo and other functions or fundraisers of the Sulphur Rodeo club.  Minimum GPA of 2.5.  Apps available from Ms. Lockhart.  Deadline is 03/24/10.

·          Janice & Carter Busch Memorial Scholarship –Must pursue a degree in nursing.  Sign up in Ms. Lockhart’s office.  Deadline is 03/24/10.  Value is a one-time $500 scholarship.

·          Bernie Varnadore Scholarship – Open to high school seniors who participated in a Dixie Boys Baseball program and plan to pursue undergraduate studies at a college or university.  The programs include Dixie Boys Baseball, Dixie Pre-Majors, and Dixie Majors Baseball.  Deadline is 04/01/10.  Apps available online at www.dixie.org.

·          Black heritage Festival scholarship – Must be a graduating senior and plan to attend any accredited 4-year college, community college, or technical school and take a minimum of 12 semester hours.  GPA of 2.5 or better.  Deadline is 04/01/10.  apps available online at www.bhflc.org or from Ms. Lockhart.

·          Buster Bynum Scholarship – Awarded to children of school bus transportation employees who have been actively employed the past 5 years in public school transportation.  Family income cannot exceed $75,000.  Cum GPA of 3.0.  Apps in counselor’s office.  Deadline is 03/29/10.

·          FCA Memorial Scholarship - Must be a committed Christian whose beliefs are in agreement with the FCA Statement of Faith, life must exemplify the ideals of the FCA, must be an active member of FCA, and a good student.  Minimum GPA of 3.0.  Deadline is 05/31/10.

·          Freshman Entergy Scholars Scholarship – Must attend Southern University in Baton Rouge.  Entergy must be your service provider.  Minimum GPA of 3.0 and minimum ACT of 25.  Apps available from Ms. Lockhart.  Deadline is 04/01/10.

·          Leroy Ford Memorial – Must major in either Math Education or Science Education.  No other type of education.  Sign up in counselor’s office by 03/24/10.  Value is a one-time $500 scholarship.

·          Horatio Alger Scholarship – Students who have financial need and have exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity.  2.0 GPA and must pursue a bachelor’s degree at a college or university in Louisiana.  Apply online at www.horatioalger.org/scholarships.  Deadline is April 15, 2010.

·          John J. Johnson II Memorial Foundation Scholarship – Must have a high moral standing, GPA of 3.0 or higher, participate in extracurricular activities. Apps are available from Ms. Lockhart.  Return apps to Ms. Lockhart by 03/24/10. 

·          Sulphur Kiwanis Club Scholarship - $1000 Scholarship/semester for 8 semesters.  Minimum GPA of 3.0 and you must attend a 4 year accredited Louisiana University.  Preferably a Key Club member.  Apps are in the counselor’s office.  Deadline is 03/24/10.

·          Lake Charles American Press Scholarship – Must attend McNeese, minimum GPA of 2.5, financial need, active in school activities and 250 word essay required.  Application in counselor’s office.  Deadline is 03/24/10.  Value is $600 for 4 semesters.

·          Louisiana Middle School Scholarship - The LMSA is offering a $100 scholarship to a senior who plans to enter the field of education.  Deadline is 04/09/10.  See Ms. Lockhart for app.

·          Craig McGuire Memorial Scholarships – Minimum GPA of 2.5 and ACT of 18, and a one page essay.  Scholarship value is $1000.  Return completed app to Ms. Lockhart by 03/24/10.

·          Carol Meyer Memorial Scholarship – Pursue a career in math or math education.  Value is $500 and deadline is 04/27/10.  App is available online at www.lamath.org/CMSApplication.doc.

·          Ray D. Molo Chapter Book Stipend – Grambling University is offering a $1000 book stipend to a 2010 graduating senior who plans to attend Grambling.  GPA of 2.5 or better.  App available from Ms. Lockhart.  Deadline is 04/23/10.

·          James Murphy Memorial Scholarship Must attend McNeese State University and GPA of 2.5-3.2.  Apps are available from Ms. Lockhart.  Deadline is 03/24/10.

·          Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding Scholarship – High school seniors seeking to enter into an undergraduate program at an accredited community or technical college.  Louisiana students are required to attend a college or vocational –technical school in Louisiana only.  Value of scholarship is $1000-1500.  Deadline is 04/16/10.  Apps available from Ms. Lockhart.

·          Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity Scholarship – You must be a male who will attend McNeese, 3.0 GPA or higher, 21 ACT composite and demonstrate excellent leadership and volunteer in the community to do work.  Value is $500 Deadline – 4/15/10.

·          Dr. Ulric Pryce Memorial Scholarship - $2000 given to a graduating senior.  GPA of 2.5 or better and acceptable ACT/SAT score.  Must be and American citizen and accepted for admissions to a college or university of their choice.  Application is available from Ms. Lockhart or online at www.zetapsilambda.org.  Deadline is 04/15/10.

·          Student – View scholarship - Must attend a 4-year college, community/junior college or career school.  Log on to www.student-view.comand complete application survey about colleges in your area.  Random drawing to award scholarship.  Deadline is 04/22/10.  Seven scholarships will be awarded.

·          Sulphur Cheerleaders Booster Club Scholarship – Value $250 one-time scholarship, 4-year varsity cheerleader currently attending SHS, minimum GPA of 3.0, 250 word essay.  Applications are available from Ms. Lockhart.  Deadline is 03/24/10.

·          SWLA Center for Health – Must enroll or be accepted full time into any accredited college or university and major in a health care related field.  Must attend the fall semester after high school graduation.  Must have minimum 2.5 GPA and essay required. Apps available from Ms. Lockhart.  Deadline 04/02/10.

·          Versie L. Williams Memorial Scholarship – Must be a graduating senior who plans to attend an accredited college, university, or technical school.  Must have an ACT score of 20 and a minimum GPA of 2.5.  Deadline is 03/19/10.  Apps available from Mrs. Lockhart.
